Birds + Flies Series
Featuring seasonal warblers you’re likely to encounter in the woods + waters of Maine, this series celebrates classic streamer patterns in playful relationship with birds of similar palette.
Black Throated Blue Warbler
Setophaga caerulescens: These birds are frequently observed in the shadows of the understory, picking insects from under leaves. Males are vocal and territorial; you’ll often hear an encounter rather than see one.
Black throated blues are often my company driving down logging roads in western Maine, or walking in to the river. At my home outside of Portland, a few returning warbler families nest and are frequently a first sighting in spring, and a sign I should get back to the river.

Blue Devil Streamer
Designed by Carrie Stevens as one of her Forgotten Flies. This pattern utilizes a mix of tinsel, buck tail, schlappen, peacock herl, partridge (or ruffed grouse) hackle, and jungle cock for the eye. Variations abound, modifying color and composition.
